The Paleo Diet: It's all the rage
The Paleo Diet is all the rage these days, but you might want to stop and think before jumping on the bandwagon. For most people it's a vast improvement over current eating habits. After all, you won't be consuming refined sugars and processed foods anymore. But before you overhaul your entire nutritional lifestyle, there are a few things you might want to consider...
In a nutshell, the Paleo Diet focuses on a diet rich in animal protein, along with fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. It avoids legumes, starchy vegetables, grains of all varieties, dairy, refined sugar and processed foods. To be honest, I find this a bit too heavy on the protein and I think it's more restrictive than most people will maintain on a long-term basis.
Because I am a Nutrition Therapist, I generally don't recommend drastic changes in eating habits and I encourage my clients to make changes that they can incorporate into their lives for the long haul. Eliminating all grains and legumes, for example, may have its place for certain people. However, most people can consume these items strategically to maximize their benefits, while reducing their side effects.
As with most things in life, moderation is key.
