Of 25 Highest Paid Ridgefield Public Employees, 24 Are School Admins.

It turns out, according to the table below, that school employees in Ridgefield occupy 24 of the top 25 highest paid positions in town. Only the chief of police at number 25 made the list.

It's budget time as the May referendum approaches, and that means it's time to look at where Ridgefield taxpayers' money is going. And with much talk about renovated libraries, purchased land and programs either cut or added to the school schedule, public salaries don't always make the headlines. So how much do our town employees make? What positions are most highly paid? And in what departments? It turns out, according to the table below put together from information gathered from the town human resources department and the school personnel department, that school employees in Ridgefield occupied 24 of the top 25 highest paid positions in Ridgefield in 2011. Only the chief of police at number 25 made the list. Paul Hendrickson, Business …

Voting for Patch's 'Best of 2012' Begins Feb. 27

Patch is depending on you to vote for the best businesses in town!

Next week, Ridgefield Patch will debut a new feature that will ask you — the users — to tell us the places that are worthy to be our list of the "Best of Ridgefield 2012." Do you have a favorite Mexican restaurant, florist or yoga studio? Where's the best place in Ridgefield to get a cup of coffee or to get your car washed? If so, check out Patch on Monday, Feb. 27 to support your favorite businesses! Each Monday morning, Patch will post a new poll asking what the "best of" is in a particular category. Feel free to vote, view the results and post comments about why you made your choice (or perhaps, to protest why a certain business didn't make our poll). You can even post photos that you've taken while visiting your favorite business. …

Tree Dumping: Some Start Early

It's beginning to look a lot like tree fatigue.

For some people, yesterday's Christmas tree is today's bird house. Call it tree dumping, call it returning nature's bounty to the fold, or call it holiday fatigue – but some people can't wait to show their Christmas tree the door on Dec. 26. Towns around Fairfield County have different policies to help those eager to rid their houses of the once verdant boughs. For three tickets and a current sticker on the car, the Wilton Transfer station will take evergreens formally known as Christmas trees. Residents just must make sure their tree is ornament and tinsel free. "Well, that's just common sense. We would like that," said Mike Ahern of Wilton's transfer station. Most people leave trees up until just after New Year's. Many wait until Jan. 6…

Election 2010

Vote With a Click?

Candidates for Secretary of the State say they want to make voting easier, perhaps online.

Editor's Note: This is part of a series of articles that focuses on issues that matter to voters in the upcoming Nov. 2 election. To view where candidates stand on issues relevant to Ridgefield, and to add your comments, click here for the 2010 Patch Voter Guide on this race. Theresa White spends much of her time traveling and, as a result, getting to her polling place can prove challenging. As an airline employee, she's often en route to destinations far from her Fairfield home on election days. While absentee voting is her only option at the moment, she says online voting "would be great" not only for her but also for her mother. "She's older, so unless I take her to vote she can't drive herself," White said. This year, White said she …

On Real Estate

On Real Estate: Play Ball!

Real estate is a team sport.

You can't win at basketball, football or baseball without a solid team. Likewise, a winning real estate transaction relies on a team of professionals working together on your behalf. And just like in sports, it's important to pull your team together before the game begins. Buyers and sellers alike rely on the various players to provide professional real estate services. When starting to think about making a move, the first thing to do is to hire your team manager, the real estate agent. Your agent will coordinate all aspects of the transaction and can help you fill out your team before you get too far along in the process. The last position you want to be in is looking for a lawyer or mortgage broker after you've made a deal on a property…

On Real Estate: When to Sell Your Home

Sell when that's what you need to do at that point in your life.

Things are better in Ridgefield real estate—better because homes are selling, prices have stabilized and people are moving forward with their lives. At least that's how things look today. Tomorrow is anybody's guess. And I really mean that it's a guess. Everyone wants to know if the worst is over, if values will start rising again, if the pace of sales will pick up to 2005 levels. We all see the papers, websites and TV news reports. And just like the weather, every day the forecasts change. Prices stabilizing, prices rising, prices falling, foreclosures will double, mortgage rates will rise, unemployment will worsen, the recession is over, great time to buy…  Just like the stock market (or any other market), there are many pundits and …

On Real Estate: When Will We See Market Bottom?

Many market forces are at play.

Have Ridgefield home prices hit bottom yet? I sure hope so! But the reality is that nobody really knows. Lots of homeowners hoping, many pundits predicting and you… well, you don't know what to think. Just this week America's foreclosure scorekeeper, Realty Trac Inc., reported record US foreclosure filings for the second quarter: 269,962. It's now expected that 2010 will see the most foreclosures ever. In Connecticut, Fairfield County is only second to New Haven County in current foreclosure filings. And if you think this is bad, 2011 could be worse, as another wave of repossessions is expected to hit the market. Although many New England towns like Ridgefield lagged behind much of the country in feeling the pain of shifting real estate …

On Real Estate: July Market Notes

Ridgefield's market is holding its own.

Whew! The first half of 2010 is in the can, and the Ridgefield real estate market is, well… it's holding its own.  My office has been very busy with closings lately, many of which were facilitated by the homebuyer credit offered by Uncle Sam to income-qualified buyers. To receive the $8,000 credit (first-time homebuyers) or the $6,500 credit, the deal needed signed contracts by April 30. These transactions are closing now. By all accounts, this incentive (combined with incredibly low mortgage rates) has fueled recent market activity. All of the realtors, real estate lawyers and mortgage brokers have been working overtime getting these deals closed for our clients. For the first six months of 2010, 120 single-family homes were sold in …
