Trumbull Police said a Trumbull woman entered a dressing room in Macy's at the Westfield Trumbull Mall on Jan. 13 carrying clothing and exited carrying nothing. When she tried to leave without paying, police said she had $379 in merchandise. *** An SUV pulled out of a children’s day school and onto Rte. 33 in Wilton, smashing into a 2011 Subaru Outback, and then drove off. Police said that senior-citizen driving the Subaru was not hurt, and are on the look-out for a large, white SUV—one with front end damage. *** The New Canaan Library's director reported a larceny to police on Jan. 11. Two Recent RHS Graduates Killed In S. Carolina Crash

Brian M. McGrath and Billings S. Fuess, both 22, were killed in a Columbia, S.C., accident early Wednesday morning.

Brian M. McGrath and Billings S. Fuess, both 22, were killed in a Columbia, S.C., car accident early Wednesday morning -- both men were recent graduates of Ridgefield High School. The 5 a.m. accident, which occured on George Rogers Blvd. in Columbia, killed two women in addition to McGrath and Billings: Kelsey C. Harris, 23, and Melinda S. Pipp, 24, both of Columbia, according to the Columbia coroner's office. McGrath and Harris were students at the University of South Carolina, and Fuess was a former student of the university. The four were last seen at a local nightspot before leaving in McGrath's car. McGrath and Fuess were reportedly best friends since high school. Trumbull police arrested a Winsted man on charges he stole checks from his mother and cashed them for about $8,000. *** Westport police charged a Bridgeport man with possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle after initiating a traffic stop and spotting marijuana in his back seat. A search of the vehicle turned up a shotgun in the trunk. The man told the officers it was his father's gun and that he forgot it was in his car.  *** Wilton police found themselves stuck at Norwalk Hospital this past weekend after a non-violent offender under their care collapsed at the courthouse before being arraigned, forcing Wilton to stand by their man's side while he was admitted as a patient. Ridgefield Man Arrested For DUI With Two Children In Backseat

Police pulled over and arrested a man for speeding and driving while intoxicated with his two young children and wife in the car.

Wilton police pulled over a 42-year-old man at 2:13 a.m. Jan. 1 for traveling 61 in a 40 mph zone on Rte. 7, according to police reports. Police said that upon stopping the driver, “he was found to [have] consumed alcoholic beverages prior to driving. He was unable to perform the standardized field sobriety tests and was taken into custody,” reports state. Reports identify the man as Thomas Chacko, a Ridgefield resident. The accused said he was at a friend’s house in Wilton and was driving back to Ridgefield, police said. Also in the car were Chacko’s two daughters, aged 9 and 5, traveling in the backseat, and his wife, who was seated as passenger. A father coming to his daughter's aid ended up with assault charges after brandishing a butcher knife at a man who apparently knocked repeatedly on his daughter's door and then waited in his car in her driveway. While the two were arguing, there was some amount of arm waving, and allegedly the man cut his finger on the father's butcher knife.  *** Fairfield police started Christmas early when a suspect who had stolen a vehicle raced through town, hitting medians and causing landscape damage, and ramming into a police car. Fire At Golf Art Causes Moderate Damage, No Injuries

Early Wednesday morning around 5 a.m., the Ridgefield Fire Department responded to a fire at Golf Art on Rte. 7.

Early Wednesday morning around 5 a.m., the Ridgefield Fire Department responded to a fire at Golf Art on Rte. 7. The structure fire, which was found by the fire marshal's office to be electrical in nature, caused only moderate damage to the building, and no one was injured. Approximately 25 firefighters responded to the scene, according to a release from Fire Chief Heather Burford, and there was no one inside the building as Golf Art had been closed for the holidays since Dec. 24. The picture framing business has been at that location for 14 years. Rte. 7 was closed during the firefighters' efforts and opened soon thereafter. Fatal Stamford Fire Ruled 'Accidental In Nature,' Caused By Trashed Firewood

Stamford's top fire investigators have concluded that Sunday morning's fatal fire on Shippan Ave. was accidental and caused by discarded embers.

The head fire marshals investigating the Sunday morning fire at a Shippan Avenue residence, which resulted in the deaths of two adults and three children, revealed their preliminary findings during a 4 p.m. Tuesday press conference at the Stamford Government Center. "On the behalf of the entire Stamford community, of whom I represent, our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of these people that we lost in a tragic Christmas fire that took the lives of three children and their grandparents," Mayor Michael Pavia said as the conference began. Press Conference: Several Rescue Attempts Fruitless in Christmas Fire

City officials speak with reporters to share the latest in the investigation into the deadly Shippan Avenue fire.

Update 5:19 p.m.: Over and over, attempts were made to rescue the family lost in the Shippan Christmas Day fire. Each one failed. Michael Borcina, the boyfriend of Madonna Badger, made one. He got back inside the building and led two of the children downstairs from the third floor to the second, but in the heat, smoke and confusion, two girls ran off—one went back upstairs and the other ran elsewhere in the burning home. The body of one of those children was found with her grandmother near the stairway at the front of the house. Madonna Badger, the homeowner, also tried to get back into the building, but the flames prevented her, and firefighters who found her still attempting to get in brought her back, away from the flames. Operation S.A.N.T.A. Clamps Down on Drinking, Driving

State police are stepping up enforcement in light of increased drinking.

Connecticut State Police are joining colleagues across the nation to curb drunken driving this month. Operation S.A.N.T.A (Stop Another Needless Tragic Accident) means that “DUI enforcement will increase dramatically during this holiday season,“ according to state police. Law enforcement in the area will target Interstate 95 and other state roads. Sobriety checkpoints are planned. “Our state troopers are trying to save lives and keep all of our roads and highways safe,” said Reuben Bradford, Emergency Services & Public Protection Commissioner. “Remember mixing alcohol with driving any vehicle is a dangerous combination for everyone, and illegal in our state”. Police Search Train in Darien for Shooting Suspect

MTA and Darien police stopped and search a 10:52 a.m. train out of New Haven for a double homicide suspect wanted in Hartford, according to the Darien Times.

While Occupy Darien was taking place nearby, MTA and Darien police stopped a train at the Darien station to search for a suspect in a double homicide, according to the Darien Times. Hartford police have a warrant out for the arrest of Rocky Williams, who is suspected of killing his wife and friend on Thursday. The train continued its scheduled stops about 16 minutes behind schedule, according to MTA spokesperson Marjorie Anders.
