'So Starts the Democratic Wing of the Tea Party'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

STAMFORD: "The elderly should not have to pay anything to use the beaches, they helped build this country and now they should be able to appreciate it and use it. In some cities they have Oxygen Yoga programs (see the book 'Oxygen Yoga: A Spa Universe') for seniors on the beach for free. It is easy and something they can all do. Please give them a break." This is one reader's response to the Board of Representatives' decision to not increase the beach parking permit fee by $10. TRUMBULL: "Is there documentation somewhere that validates this assumption that sewer usage is increased when one has a pool? First, homeowners with pools that have a sand filter are required to dig a dry well to accommodate backwashing. The rest of us have …

Praying at the Church of Sports

Sports: Bigger than politics, war, world economics and even religion?

Boy, do I have quite a hangover! You know when you overindulge and forget your limits, and then go out with a big bang? The following day it sure is a rough road to recuperation, with the after-effects lingering for days. I feel like I’ve just been put through the ringer. Think I’m talking about alcohol? Think again. I’m talking about the headache I still have from the Super Bowl. Like many people, we celebrated with friends and the party boasted great food, great conversation and a lot of spirit. Even the kids got into it, filling out their ballots for game trivia and cheering just as loudly in their Giants jerseys. But the game wasn’t even the half of it. The buildup to Sunday seemed never ending. Supermarkets overflowed with football …

'Science Has Put An End to That Potential Secret ...'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

FAIRFIELD: "Where are the OCCUPIERS??? We've identified Fairfield's ONE PERCENT!" This is one reader's response to an article listing the town's highest paid employees. NEW CANAAN: "How about 'Wuthering Heights?' That's too great a book to just be a girl thing." This is one reader's response to a "Local Voices" post by blogger Mike McAteer about his favorite literary characters. RIDGEFIELD: "There you go, Gals ... Science has put an end to that potential secret ..." This is one reader's response to the state Supreme Court's ruling that a Middletown man could proceed with a lawsuit seeking $190,000 in damages from a Ridgefield man in a rare paternity case. SHELTON: "Unfortunately in the economy right now, parents are having to make choices …

'Carrot Top is Now Fearful ...'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

FAIRFIELD: "If Starbuck's stances on the 2nd Amendment and gay marriage stop the Mommies in their Chevy Suburbans from cutting across 3 lanes of traffic on the Post Road to get their fix, I will have to frequent their establishments more often as a show of support." This is one reader's response to news that some religious and political groups are urging Starbucks customers to grab their morning coffee elsewhere in light of the company's stance on gay marriage and its policy on guns. WILTON: "Carrot Top is now fearful ..." This is one reader's response to the latest installment of "From the Driver's Seat," where columnist Heather Borden Hervé talks about donning a clown wig in reaction to the comments her columns often receive. SHELTON: "…

'If You Can't Stand the Heat, Get Out of the Kitchen'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

RIDGEFIELD: "As much as I hate the 3 musketeers, I do admit they are doing the right thing putting it on the May ballot. This way we can vote both the budget and library down at the same time — YES." This is one reader's response to an article about Ridgefield Library's pending renovations, which could result in an expanded program schedule. SHELTON: "'If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.' If you want to push your agenda in peoples faces expect to be pushed back." A reader posted this on Shelton Patch's Facebook page in response to news that some religious and political groups are urging Starbucks customers to grab their morning coffee elsewhere in light of the company's stance on gay marriage and its policy on guns. …

Social Host Liability: Keep Your Guests Safe For The Big Game

"Safety" isn't just a football term.

This weekend will be somewhat of a National Holiday. While not on the calendar, Super Bowl Weekend is about as functionally close to a National Holiday as it gets. When most people think about the Super Bowl, they think hard hitting action, explosive plays, great defense, and one heck of a half-time show. Of course, you will want to share this incredible experience with others and may consider throwing a Super Bowl party. The Super Bowl is among the most watched American television events of the year and is second only to Thanksgiving for U.S. food consumption. Along with food consumption comes alcohol consumption and those two come together in countless Super Bowl Parties. So what liability could you have if a guest at your party, who …

'Politics — Go Figure'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

FAIRFIELD: "This entire scenario seems quite ironic to me. We have a RTM member that wants to censure previous public officials for not respecting other town bodies and the rules that govern the administration and interaction between each and the public. But, the RTM member fails to follow the rules that govern his own body. The motion to censure was raised under the New Business part of the agenda. It therefore cannot be voted on in the same meeting. Chapter 115 Sec1 subsection 33 of the Town Code states: 'Any matter not on the Warning for a meeting except: a) honorary resolutions and b) matters previously held in committee, may be discussed at such meeting but shall not be acted or voted upon until the resolution stands over one meeting…

'Tax and Walk, Tax and Walk ...'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

DARIEN: "Raise taxes, it's going to get better, trust me — not. The CT electorate just isn't that smart, this is all no surprise. When more than half the state has their hand out, it becomes a classic example of left wing ideology gone amok. What happens when people and businesses of southern Fairfield County start saying forget this and move out?" This is one reader's response to this week's installment of "Capitol DisPatch, where lawmakers discussed the state's financial woes. FAIRFIELD: "I'm curious about this whole hookah thing. People purposely go to a place to engage in a mass smoke-in? And you smoke out of one of those contraptions like the caterpillar in 'Alice in Wonderland?'" This is one reader's response to news that Jaled Gorra…

I Am the Face of Unemployment

With the call for “Jobs! Jobs! Jobs!” at the center of political rhetoric and making headlines daily, it’s time for another glimpse on what it’s really like to live it — firsthand.

I’m more than a number — my family is greater than a statistic. We are the face of unemployment. I first wrote about our experience shortly after my husband was laid off. That was 14 months ago. Unfortunately, we’re still in the same boat. Both of my Patch columns, “From the Driver’s Seat” and “Patch In,” are written from a very personal perspective. In writing about the layoff, I tried to give a glimpse of what it felt like and what we were going through. I couldn’t claim to be opining from my perspective each week if I didn’t really give readers an honest account and the true context of my life. It also helped to share our story, both from a cathartic, therapeutic standpoint, and also from the belief that others in the same situation …

'Third World Countries Have Better Trains ...'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

FAIRFIELD: "I'd like to add 'leaking trains' to the list. I'm currently on one that is pouring water through the roof. Where ARE the new trains? Third world countries have better trains — and I get to pay $325/mo for this!" This is one reader's response to the CT Rail Commuter Council's list of ongoing issues that Metro-North riders face in 2012. RIDGEFIELD: "Ms. Manners, perhaps we should get rid of public education in this town as well. Why should the town provide this service 'for free' when there are private schools competing? Get a clue." This is one reader's response to a debate among members of the Ridgefield Board of Selectmen over whether an expanded program schedule at the renovated library would create unwanted competition for …
