Five Things You Must Do in Ridgefield This Weekend

Paula Poundstone is performing Friday at the Ridgefield Playhouse, 80 East Ridge Ave., Ridgefield, at 8 p.m. A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany with the Boston Globe to write: “Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy.”

The Ridgefield Theater Barn opens their 2013-2014 Season with this bracing and critically acclaimed play.  August: Osage County is a portrait of the dysfunctional American family at its finest—and absolute worst. When the patriarch of the Weston clan disappears one hot summer night, the family reunites at the Oklahoma homestead, where long-held secrets are unflinchingly and uproariously revealed. The three-act, mammoth of a play combines epic tragedy with black comedy, dramatizing three generations of unfulfilled dreams and leaving not one of its thirteen characters unscathed.

The Ridgefield Guild of Artists is hosting the opening reception for their 36th annual juried exhibition from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the guild at 34 Halpine Lane. The show runs from Sept. 28 to Oct. 26. RGA’s Annual Juried Show provides a venue for both established and emerging artists. It is a jewel in the crown of events that the Guild offers each year, and our beautiful galleries brim with works of all sizes, shapes and colors.

Charity event to benefit Necessities Bag Saturday at Cellar XV under the tent, 88 Danbury Road. Every year to celebrate its anniversary Cellar XV picks a charity and hosts an incredible wine tasting in support of that charity. 'It's our way of saying thank-you to the community for supporting us!', says owner Doug Thompson. 'And this year it is our privilege to support another Ridgefielder, Maureen Lutz, and her charity- Necessities Bag!'

Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra will open its season at 8 p.m. Saturday at Ridgefield High School. A standard violin repertoire piece and one of the best symphonies ever written—Beethoven's Symphony No. 7—will be played at the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra’s first concert. The concerto is Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 with soloist Jennifer Frautschi, and the evening begins with Kodály's Dances of Galanta. The brilliantly programmed concert focuses on rhythmic effects.
