Dinner Made a Difference

This piece was submitted by a Ridgefield parent, Gretchen Bishop.

I grew up in a family of six- two parents and four kids- in a town not unlike Ridgefield. There were good schools with lots of opportunities for enrichment outside of work/school. We all were busy with sports, clubs, choirs, plays, church, youth group, scouts, committees, etc. By the time we kids had become teens, life was pretty hectic.

Everything stopped, however, on weekdays at 6 pm. That was dinner time and everyone’s presence was required. While passing the peas, we talked about our day. It was there I found out what was going on in my brother’s and sisters’ lives, where we tested jokes and stories on each other, where I most felt I had my parents’ attention. Today, when I think about my youth, it’s that time around the dining room table that comes to mind. It provided an anchor throughout my childhood.

I didn’t realize it at the time (and I doubt my parents did) but teenagers who eat dinner more often with their families are less likely to drink, smoke cigarettes, or use other drugs. This research finding of National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) prompted the establishment of National Family Dinner Day in 2001. Ridgefielders are encouraged to participate this year with “Dinner Makes A Difference” on Monday, September 23rd. For those who want to splurge with a dinner together outside the home, a number of Ridgefield restaurants are offering discounts (see www.ridgefieldcoalition.org for details about restaurants as well as Family Dinner Day).

If the family dinner has not been an important part of your family’s experience, this is a time to test a change. I hope you and your family can discover the long lasting benefits and joys I had with my family.
