Seeking an 11th state title in school history and second straight, the St. Joseph boys basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the Class LL state tournament on Monday with a 56-37 victory over Ridgefield.
While the Cadets earned the right to play at home as the top-ranked seed, the contest was moved to Fairfield Warde to accommodate a larger crowd.
Ridgefield, which reached the semifinals last season for the first time in school history, finished the year at 18-6.
St. Joseph, which improved to 23-1, will face No. 5 New London in the semifinals on Wednesday at a site and time to be determined. The Whalers advanced with a 79-73 double overtime victory over No. 5 Windsor.
New London moved up to Class LL after winning the Class L state championship last year. St. Joseph defeated the Whalers 57-52 in the Northeast Basketball Classic on Dec. 28.
In the other half of the draw, No.6 seed Fairfield Prep faces No. 2 Hillhouse. Last season, the Jesuits lost to St. Joseph in the state finals at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
