Halloween at Scotland School - A Really Special Experience

Students at Scotland School enjoyed an action-packed Halloween this year, complete with an evening Spooktacular celebration in the halls of the school, individual class parties, an all-school Sing-Along, and a parade of costumes outside on school grounds.  There were no complaints from children or parents, both exuberant to celebrate a holiday that has been cancelled due to record-setting storms two years in a row.  “It was so wonderful to see the children enjoying Halloween for the first time in 3 years!   Mr. Solomon, the teachers, and staff at Scotland School kicked off the evening in such a fun way,” said Deirdre Haley, mother to Kindergartener, Benjamin.  The Spooktacular, sponsored by the PTA and coordinated by a large group of parents, proved to be a wonderful Wednesday evening.  This was followed on Halloween with the Sing-Along and the Parade.

Principal Mark Solomon, smartly dressed for Halloween as Prince Charming, began the school Sing-Along with a statement with which all Ridgefield families can identify:  “Two years ago, we planned a sing-a-long, but we got snow.  Last year we planned a sing-a-long, and we got water.  This year we got a little rain, but you know what?  WE DON’T CARE,” he exclaimed, met with applause.

Students were excited to share Halloween songs learned as part of their music curriculum, belting out timeless Halloween hits such as “5 Little Pumpkins” and “The More We Howl Together.”  The fifth grade stole the show with an original version of Bobby Pickett’s “Monster Mash,” titled “the Monster Mac,” written by Scotland fifth grade boys, and a choreographed dance to “Time Warp” from the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Scotland students went home smiling with goody bags, trick-or-treat plans, and boxes to collect donations for The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).  Here’s hoping Ridgefield will be celebrating joyful, super storm-free Halloweens for many years to come!
