SES Breeds Readers

For the second year in a row, Scotland Elementary was first in the state in the Governor's summer reading challenge.

On April 28, a group of teachers, parents and students representing Scotland Elementary School attended the ceremony for the Governor's Summer Reading Challenge. Scotland was one of the 21 schools invited for excelling in last year's reading challenge.

SES was the top performing school in Connecticut in 2009 for the second year in a row. During the summer vacation of 2009, 392 SES students read an incredible 12,698 books. Every student at SES participated in the program.

SES students also read the most books in 2008, and the school has been in the top five in the state for the last eight years which is as long as the Reading Challenge has been running.

SES Librarian Melinda Violante, Literacy Coordinator Heather Reed and two parents with their children received the award from Governor M. Jodi Rell at the Connecticut State Library in Hartford.

"I was glad to visit the State Library, and felt like I learned a lot of new things, seeing the portraits of the governors and the Connecticut charter and everything," said Finn Meacham, a second grader who attended.

His brother, SES fifth grader Aidan Meacham, added, "I was amazed when they announced at the ceremony the number of books that Scotland had read. That made me feel really proud. Also, the fact that Scotland has won this honor for the last nine years. Awesome!"

Olivia Dillon, a Scotland kindergartner, said she was very excited to take a picture with the "Mommy Governor" and said she had read a book about Connecticut this past summer.

This is a truly wonderful achievement and is made possible by the excellent cooperation between the SES families, students and faculty. SES will be part of the Governor's Summer Reading Challenge for 2010, and we fully expect that Scotland will again be the top school in the state.

In honor of the state's 375th anniversary this year, Rell said the 2010 challenge will encourage students to read at least one book by a Connecticut author or a book set in the state.

Sally Alexandroff, of the Scotland Elementary PTA, has two children currently attending the school.
