Scotland Elementary Welcomes Grandparents To Class

The occasion—packed with breakfast, classroom tours, and a concert—should become an annual affair, writes SES parent Sally Alexandroff.

Wednesday was a very special day at Scotland Elementary School. Nearly 150 grandparents of students at SES and other seniors from Founders Hall visited the school for Grandparents Day, where they were supplied with a morning full of treats.

On arrival at school the seniors were served breakfast and introduced to the school and the district by Mark Solomon, principal of SES, and Deborah Low, superintendent of Ridgefield schools.

The grandparents were then split into small groups and led on a tour of the school by members of the fifth grade SES school council.  The tour included visits to the art and music rooms and the gymnasium, and each grandparent ended their tour with a visit to the classroom of their grandchild.

Grandparents with different children in multiple grades had a busy morning, although the fifth graders were always on hand to ensure no one got lost.  Some grandparents were also given demonstrations of more recent technology such as the school's SMART boards and the computer lab.

The seniors then returned to the cafeteria for a special concert performed by members of the fifth grade band and the fifth grade chorus.  As a parting gift, plants donated by the SES PTA were presented to the grandparents.

This was the first Grandparents Day at SES, and we were thrilled that so many attended.  We are hoping that this will now become an annual event as we look to build on the relationship between the seniors and children within our community.

Sally Alexandroff has two children currently attending Scotland Elementary School.
