Scotland Elementary Students Get Their Hands On Science

PTA member Sally Alexandroff highlights some of the science programs coming to Scotland Elementary School this year.

Scotland students will be exposed to the amazing world of science and nature in the coming weeks and months. Between now and May all students will experience special science programs.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will be visited by High Touch, High Tech, a company which has been providing interactive hands-on science and nature experiences for children since 1994.

Their mission is to expose children at an early age to science and nature by providing educational programs presented in a fun manner. High Touch, High Tech runs programs specifially designed for elementary-age students as they understand that students learn best when they are involved first-hand in exploration and investigation. The science experiments allow students to make direct observations and to manipulate materials and equipment.

Fifth Grade students will complete three separate work topics. The first is called the "Power of Light."  The students will learn about the amazing properties of light by bouncing it, bending it and splitting it up, and will complete the session by building a pin-hole camera.

The second session is called "A Clockwork Orbit," which will teach the students about night and day, the moon and how the Earth's angle affects the seasons.   The students will make and bring home their own sun dial.

The final session is called "Currently Attractive" where students will learn the power of magnets and use them to make electricity. They will use the electricity to make light, heat and sound and to build electric circuits.

2nd grade students have already learned how plants make food and oxygen in the program, "Smarty Plants."  They colored their own carnation blue when learning about how plants transport water, they read tree rings and they learned about germination.

In the upcoming session "Water, Water Everywhere," the 2nd graders will discover the amazing properties of water. They will follow the water as it freezes, evaporates and circulates, and they will see how it shapes the Earth and sustains life, purifying water by distillation and filtration.

Other programs for Scotland students include the following:

Kindergarten – Get Buggy

Grade 1 – The Shadow Knows

Grade 2 – Nutty Nutrients

Grade 3 – Edison Workshop

Grade 4 – Finally Fun Machines

These programs are extremely popular at Scotland and we are very grateful to the PTA who supports these events.
