State OKs MRI for Orthopedic Hospital Branch in Stamford

State Sen. Carlo Leone's office issued this news release late Friday afternoon about the state's approval of use of an MRI machine by the New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery at its proposed branch location next to Chelsea Piers athletic complex:

On Friday State Senator Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) and other members of Stamford’s legislative delegation applauded a decision by the state Department of Public Health (DPH) to grant the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) approval for installation of an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) unit at the hospital’s proposed new location adjacent to the Chelsea Piers athletic complex in Stamford.

Senator Leone, Rep. Gerald Fox, III (D-Stamford) and Rep. Dan Fox (D-Stamford) had previously written to DPH on the hospital’s behalf in support of their request.

“The Hospital for Special Surgery has planned to open a satellite office in Stamford for some time now, and DPH’s approval for an MRI machine at the site is the last piece needed to help the project move forward. HSS’ new location will bring new, high-quality medical services to our city, along with a number of good paying jobs,” said Senator Leone.

“This represents yet another remarkable step forward in the successful redevelopment of the former Clairol site, and I couldn’t be more pleased.”

“Bringing skilled jobs to Stamford is a decision I applaud,” said State Rep. Dan Fox (D-148). “The Hospital for Special Surgery’s presence in our community will bring access to health care opportunities for our neighbors.”

“This is certainly welcomed news for the Hospital for Special Surgery," Rep. Gerald Fox, III said. "It is important that high-quality medical care and service is available in our community and the decision by the state Department of Public Health is an important step to serve medical needs of all our citizens.”

HSS has proposed building a new 20,000 square foot satellite facility in Stamford which would include physician offices and exam rooms, X-ray rooms and a Pain Management Procedure area, as well as the MRI equipment. Securing DPH’s approval of the equipment was seen as a necessary condition for the project to move forward.

HSS currently performs 3,250 MRIs at its New York City location for patients located in Connecticut and nearby Westchester, NY, and DPH has stated that the request would have no impact on existing MRI facilities in Fairfield County.

HSS would be able to provide more convenient access to an MRI for local patients (an estimated maximum of 2,540 scans) and to alleviate capacity issues at its existing hospital in New York City.

HSS currently operates a small office in Greenwich. The planned Stamford facility would provide an economic boost to Connecticut, involving a $12,000,000 investment, the presence of the country’s top rated orthopedic hospital, and a large number of new jobs.

The Hospital for Special Surgery is one of the premier hospitals for musculoskeletal medicine in the world. It is ’currently ranked #1 in the country for Orthopedics and #3 for Rheumatology by U.S News and World Report.

Founded in 1863 as the Hospital for the Relief of the Ruptured and Crippled, HSS has grown from a small rehabilitation oriented facility to an internationally renowned, academic, not for profit center for the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases.
