Ridgefield Police: Car Stuck on Lawn

Ridgefield Police were called to Mountain Road at 9 p.m. Sunday on word a car was stuck on someone's lawn. When a patrol officer arrived and approached the car, the car sped off, nearly striking the officer, who ran to his car and followed it. They had a brief chase that ended when the car struck a parked car and a tree. When the officer stopped near the car, the driver backed up and hit the cruiser. The officer and the man, later identified as Stephen Courtney, 63, of Mountain Road, Ridgefield, struggled, and the man was charged with criminal attempt to assault a police officer, interfering with a police officer, first-degree criminal mischief, driving under the influence and failure to drive right. He was also charged with reckless driving, failure to drive in the established lane, eluding police and two counts of evading responsibility.

This information was provided by the Ridgefield Police Department. A person charged with a crime is innocent until having been convicted in court.
