Ridgefield Firefighters Battle Massive Blaze on Standish Drive

Firefighters still on scene Monday afternoon after massive fire destroys home and displaces family.

Ridgefield firefighters are still at the scene of a house fire on Standish Drive, quelling the remains of a blaze that erupted Sunday evening, displacing a family and sending one resident to the hospital.

Ridgefield dispatch got the call for a fire at 25 Standish Drive just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday and arrived to find the 4,000-plus square-foot home almost fully engulfed in flames.

“More than two-thirds of the structure was fully involved,” acting Fire Chief Kevin Tappe said Monday. “There were flames coming out of almost all the doors and windows.”

The family was at home at the time and made it out safely, though one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and later released.

Without any hydrants nearby, Ridgefield called in mutual support from neighboring towns, which responded with five tankers. Crews blasted the blaze from the outside and were finally able to knock it down after 3 hours at work.

However, “It was knocked down but not out,” Tappe said.

A truck was still on-scene Monday afternoon hitting hotspots and containing any resurgent flames. Tappe said he expects firefighters will have the scene fully extinguished by late Monday afternoon.

Tappe also noted the extraordinary helpfulness of the neighbors across the street, who opened up their home to the department and the family displaced by the fire.
