Fatality Reported in Redding Train Accident [Updated]

One person has died and three passengers of the vehicle have been transported to the hospital with "serious" injuries, officials say. Danbury Line service of Metro-North is currently suspended as a result.

Update as 4:40 p.m. on Dec. 30:

One person has died as result of injuries sustained in an accident involving a vehicle and a train in Redding, according to Police Chief Douglas S. Fuchs.

In an email to Patch, Fuchs said Redding police is assisting MTA Police on the scene, at the West Redding Center crossing of the Metro-North line that runs from South Norwalk to Danbury.

The three additional passengers of the vehicle were transported to Danbury Hospital, Fuchs said. Their condition was unknown, he added; a fire official earlier said their injuries appeared "serious."

Fuchs said MTA Police are also be assisted by the Danbury Police accident reconstruction team.

The original report follows:

Four people have been transported to the hospital with serious injuries after the vehicle they were in was struck by a train today.

According to West Redding Fire Chief Glen Johnson, the train and vehicle collided shortly before 2 p.m. near the Redding Train Station. The vehicle ended up in a creek between the tracks and the road, he said.

Johnson said he believes train service on Metro-North's Danbury line has been suspended due to the accident. "They'll be investigating for a while," he said.

Redding police declined to comment on the accident.

Patch will update this article as more information becomes available.
