Community Mourns Tragic Death of Ridgefield Teen Emma Sandhu

Calling hours scheduled for Tuesday evening.

Ridgefield police are investigating the death of local high school student Emma Sandhu, who was struck by a car while walking on Ridgebury Road Friday night with a group of friends.

The 15-year-old Sandhu was walking near her home on Benson Road around 9:30 p.m. Friday when she was hit by a vehicle driving north on Ridgebury Road.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported Sandhu to Danbury Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

The driver reportedly remained at the scene to speak with police. Their name has not yet been released.

Sandhu was a talented dancer, according to a report in the News-Times Monday, which also noted that the school canceled this weekend’s showing of “Meet Me in St. Louis.”

(The performance has been rescheduled for March 23.)

Ridgefield High School also started classes Monday morning on a revised scheduled, beginning with a special Advisory Session for students coping with the tragedy. The high school has counselors, psychologists and a social worker available to students, as well as a few therapy dogs.

“This, of course, is truly a tragic time for our school community,” administrators posted on the high school website. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Emma’s family.”

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 520 Ridgebury Road, Ridgefield with Fr. Joseph A. Prince, officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends Tuesday at Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The family has requested that contributions to the Emma E. Sandhu Scholarship Fund, Ridgefield High School, 700 North Salem Road, Ridgefield, CT 06877 be made in her memory.
