Open Houses Slated For Global Studies Magnet School

The Center for Global Studies, an inter-district magnet school located within Brien McMahon High School in Norwalk, specializes in preparing students to enter the global society.

Students learn Arabic, Chinese or Japanese in small classes and they study the literature, history and culture associated with those languages. Each year, students can participate in a two-week Study Tour to Morocco, China or Japan, which includes living with families, going to school with host siblings, and visiting important cultural sites.  Annually, more than 60 students travel to these countries.

In addition, numerous experiences immerse students in the culture of Asia and the Middle East.  Close to 90 students act as host families to visiting Chinese, Japanese, and Egyptian students for two weeks each year.  Cooking from the cultures is a regular part of the curriculum. Students take field trips to the Middle Eastern and Chinese parts of Queens, go to Japanese tea ceremonies, and visit museums to deepen their experiences. Performers visit the school on a regular basis to expose students to the art forms of the world.
