Camerata d'Amici to present Christmas Concert December 15

The choral group Camerata d’Amici will present “Noel:  A Celebration of Christmas” on Sunday, December 15, at 4 p.m. at the South Salem Presbyterian Church, 111 Spring St., South Salem, NY.   Kristin Sponheim will conduct the ensemble of singers from Fairfield, Westchester, and Putnam counties in a performance of music from diverse countries, cultures, and eras.  The concert also includes traditional carols with the audience invited to sing along.

The concert opens with a joyful African spiritual from the Congo entitled “Noel,” arranged by Brad Holmes, sung in the Kituba dialect and accompanied by percussionist David Pelaggi.  The program continues with an ethereal setting by American composer Robert Young of “There is No Rose of Such Virtue”.   Young’s contemporary rendition of this venerable text portrays the wonder and awe of the speaker through a haunting melody and equally haunting harmony.  Also included in the first half of the program is John Tavener’s “The Lamb,” an exquisite setting of William Blake’s poem.

The second half of Camerata’s Christmas celebration features a number of carols from Christmas traditions around the world.  Selections range from the medieval English carol “Noel, Sing We” to a new arrangement of the seventeenth-century Canadian hymn “The Huron Carol, ” set for women’s voices by Ed Henderson, accompanied by Margarita Nuller, piano.  The concert also includes solos from Ridgefielders Thomas Carr, Michael Forbes, and Juliet Pratt.   The program will close with “This Christmastide” by Donald Fraser, a gentle invitation to remember the enduring nature of hope this Christmas, and always.

Tickets at the door are $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. Advance tickets, for a reduced ticket price for adults of $20, may be purchased by sending a check to Camerata d’Amici at P.O. Box 74, Ridgefield, CT 06877.  For more information, email info@cameratadamici.org, or go to www.cameratadamici.org
