Per capita, Ridgefield has a surprisingly large number of historic and cultural spots. Plan some outings that both entertain and educate.

Dating back to 1713, the Keeler Tavern is a “living museum of colonial history." In fact, it still houses the cannonball that was fired by the British troops after the Battle of Ridgefield. Guided tours take place Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Admission: adults $5; seniors, children and students $3; members free.

“One of the few non-collecting contemporary art museums in the United States," the Aldrich hosts a constantly rotating series of exhibitions. Ongoing educational programs and family weekends aim to bring art to the younger generations. There is even a year-round sculpture garden behind the museum. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 12-5 p.m. Costs: adults $7; seniors & college students $4; members, k-12 teachers & children 18 and under free. Admission is free for everyone on Tuesdays.

This organization supports local and emerging artists via exhibitions, art classes, lectures and artist-in-residency program opportunities. The gallery is open Wednesday-Sunday from 12-4 p.m. Membership fee is $55 ($30 for seniors and students). Entrance to the gallery is free. http://rgoa.org.

For a small-town theater, the Playhouse puts on some amazing shows. From family plays to top headlining acts, and with newly released movies in-between, there is literally something for everyone. In its 46th season, this fully professional orchestra brings impressive classical music to residents of Ridgefield and beyond. The orchestra performs five concerts at the Anne S. Richardson Auditorium at the High School throughout the year. It also takes part in a summer series in Westchester County, NY. The Theater Barn has been treating audience members to “quality live theater” for 45 years. Cabaret seating allows for a more intimate viewing experience. Attendees are welcome to bring their own food and drinks to consume pre-show and during intermission. There are also workshops for adults and young (8-18) aspiring actors (age 8-18). The “Theater Barn Kids” meet twice each week for eight weeks, and each session ends with live performances to the public.
