What’s Happening in Retail: Hutton’s Fine Men’s Wear

Hutton’s Fine Men’s Wear, one of Ridgefield’s oldest retail businesses, didn’t begin here, but it is thriving in relatively new quarters at 15 Bailey Avenue.  It dates back to 1875, when it was established in Southington, Conn., by William Hutton, an ancestor of its current proprietor, Douglas Hutton. “Our family has continued William’s tradition of selling the finest tailored clothing, sportswear and accessories to generations of men,” he said.

Hutton’s eventually sought space in Fairfield County, became acquainted with Ridgefield, liked it and relocated to Copps Hill in 2006.  “We moved to Bailey Avenue in 2010 when the focus at Copps Hill turned to food,” Mr. Hutton said.

“I’m always editing my merchandise and trying new lines, different styles and brands,” he said.  This fall Hutton’s is introducing outerwear and sportswear from Barbour, the prestigious English company known for rugged, stylish clothing.   In fact, his merchandise has skewed more toward sportswear in recent years, with such lines as Ibex, Kuhl, Wellensteyn, Peter Millar and Tommy Bahama.
