What’s Happening in Dining: Sagi Cucina Italiana

Bianca DeMasi and Sabrina Rullo, the mother-daughter team that runs Sagi Cucina Italiana at 231/2  Catoonah Street, welcome diners into their Southern Italian restaurant like family. So much so that when Ms. Rullo gets married in Italy at the end of this month, 35 of her wedding guests will be Sagi customers.  “They are like family, and I couldn’t imagine not having them at my wedding,” she said.

The two opened Sagi in 2008 with the mission of offering typical, home-cooked Southern Italian dishes, many from Calabria, where they both grew up. Ms. DeMasi, the chef of the duo (Ms. Rullo is the wine expert), is known for her homemade pastas and sauces. “A popular entree is ricotta gnocchi, which is very light,” she said.  “And we are famous for our Bolognese meat sauce on fresh pasta, like pappardelle.”

Tuesday is lasagna night at Sagi.  “We serve lasagna rooted in Italy’s Calabrese region,” said Ms. Rullo.  “It has meatballs, peas, eggs and ham and is a big seller.”

Desserts are also homemade – including, tiramisu, zabaglione on fresh berries and Ms. Rullo’s favorite, Chambord chocolate mousse.

The restaurant caters, has a private dining room and a newly planted outdoor patio.  It has also been the scene of weddings and receptions.
