Brewster Swim Club Participates in Aid Mission to Honduras

Wings Over Water School of Swimming in Brewster, N.Y., will participate in The Roatan Expedition, an aid mission to the island of Roatan, Honduras, from June 17-24.  They will be joined by two other U.S. Swim School Association members and top gymnastics and dance schools from California to New York.

According to Wings Over Water founder and owner, Edie Flood, “Volunteers from Wings Over Water will teach water safety, swimming and physical fitness to the children and families of the island, where there is currently no public pool or swim program.  The Expedition also plans to build a library, create a garden and set up a water collection system.”

Honduras is the third-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and most Hondurans do not have running water, electricity or plumbing. Less than a third of its children finish primary school.

Before their arrival in Roatan, Expedition participants will ship supplies of much-needed new items, such as books, toys, school supplies, and clothing, including swim suits and other water gear.

From now through May 10 Wings Over Water will hold fundraising activities for the Expedition. Items to be shipped to Roatan are on display for purchase in the swim school’s lobby, and Underwater Picture Days are planned for current members. People may also make tax-deductible contributions by cash or check.

“We are very thankful for the success of Wings Over Water,” said Ms. Flood, “and volunteering for this mission is our opportunity to give back.”
