The Choir at St. Stephen’s Church, led by Scott Toperzer, Minister of Music, will present a Lenten Choral Evensong on Sunday, March 11, at 5 PM.
Evensong, the centuries-old tradition of sung evening prayer, includes hymns, anthems, and Anglican chant. The canticles (or songs) on March 11 will be the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A by British composer Herbert Sumsion (1899-1995). This wonderful setting of the Song of Mary and Song of Simeon features a striking and memorable recurring melody. Choir member Thomas Carr will be the featured baritone soloist in the Nunc Dimittis.
The anthems will be selections from the Andliga Sånger (Spiritual Songs) by 19th century Swedish composer August Söderman. These ethereal short pieces are settings of various Mass texts for choir and organ. Soprano Lydia Toperzer will be the soloist in Söderman’s Kyrie.
A wine and cheese reception in South Hall will follow the service.
