The choral group Camerata d’Amici will present “My Spirit Sang All Day” on Sunday, May 20th at 4 p.m. at South Salem Presbyterian Church, 111 Spring Street, South Salem, NY. Artistic Director Kristin Sponheim will conduct the ensemble of singers from Fairfield and Westchester counties in a performance that weaves together music of hope and inspiration.
Playfulness and lightheartedness shine through in “Sing we and chant it,” a madrigal by Renaissance composer Thomas Morley and “Tambur,” a choral depiction of a lively Hungarian dance by Lajos Bárdos.
Quiet and reflection are at the core of “The Wakening,” a setting by American composer Giselle Wyers of an ode to nature by Theodore Roethke. “The Pasture,” by Randall Thompson, a setting for men’s voices of a poem by Robert Frost, creates a loving, pastoral mood as the speaker describes his work for the day, and urges the listener to join him, with the request, “You come too.” Another song of affection is “Dandansoy,” a setting of a folk song from the Philippines sung in the Hiligaynon language by the women of Camerata. Sunday’s concert also includes pieces that address our connection to God. “Esto les Digo” by Kinley Lange speaks in a gentle voice of God’s unfailing presence and guidance in our lives.
A spirit of triumph and celebration is captured in “Joshua,” a recent composition by American composers Paul Caldwell & Sean Ivory. With a haunting, lyrical opening section sung in Hebrew, and a vibrant closing section adorned with a shimmering obbligato trumpet, this piece tells the story of Joshua and the walls that came “tumbling down” in the Battle of Jericho.
Vocal soloists featured in Sunday’s concert include Thomas Carr, Michael Forbes, Aurora López Cancino, Doug Planker, and Juliet Pratt. Instrumentalists include Margarita Nuller (piano) and Doug Myers (trumpet).
Tickets at the door are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors, and $10 for children 12 and under.
