"Small Works of Whimsy" to Open at Watershed Gallery

Watershed Gallery will celebrate their new exhibit, “Small Works of Whimsy,” with an opening reception at 7:30pm, on Saturday, November 23, 2013.  The new show features artwork from local, national and international artists, and will run until January 23, 2014.

“The artwork in this exhibition is smaller than we usually show, so they are appropriate for gift-giving or personal indulgences,” says Jennifer Mathy, Watershed Gallery’s director.  “Each of the five artists we invited to this show have produced playful works of art; they convey joy and elicit smiles.”

Hadrian Mendoza, a stoneware potter from Virginia, produces expressionistic and abstract shapes that rely heavily on Philippine cultural undertones.   A highlight of the Watershed Gallery exhibit will be “Hadrian’s Wall,” an installation of more than twenty 3-dimensional free-form globes and ceramic heads – some of which are artist self portraits.

French painter Martin Lavergne, who works under the pseudonym of Moogly, uses recycled cardboard and mixed media to reinvent the art of portrait painting; his energetic works of art portray humans as fantastical and funny animals.

Local Connecticut painter David O’Reilly relies on a pastel color palette and soft light to create quiet, rustic dreamscapes. Fascinated by the texture apparent in antique photographs, O’Reilly will also exhibit black-and-white paintings that seemingly morph into color.

Rounding out the show will be new work from photographer Florence Notté and paper cut artist Béatrice Coron. “Etched in Stone,” Ms. Coron’s 16-square-foot paper cut inspired by Ridgefield, was recently returned to the gallery from an exhibit at the Berkshire Museum. She has contributed a number of small, light-hearted papercut works.  And Ms. Notté will share new photos from her award-winning series, “My Little Happiness.”  The sepia-toned series of photos won first prize from the French Federation of Photography in 2012.

Watershed Gallery is located at 23 Governor Street in Ridgefield.  The public is welcome to attend the opening reception on Saturday. For more information on the “Small Works of Whimsy” exhibit, please visit www.watershedgallery.com or call 203.438.4387.
