One for the Books - A Record Setting Event to Benefit the Ridgefield Library

History will be made in Branchville on September 8 when Mitch Ancona attempts to break the world record for “sabrage,” opening a Champagne bottle with a saber.

“One for the Books - A Record Setting Event to Benefit the Ridgefield Library” will feature champagne brunch and prime viewing of the record-setting attempt.  Sponsored by Ancona’s Wines & Liquors, Ancona’s Market, and Tusk & Cup, the event will begin at 11 am under a tent in the Ancona’s parking lot in Branchville (720 Branchville Road, at the intersection of Rte 7 and Rte 102).  Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Ridgefield Library.

On September 8 at 12:00 pm, Ancona will officially attempt to break the world record for “Most Bottles of Champagne Opened With a Sabre in One Minute.”  The current record is 32; Mitch need only saber 33 to become part of history – a feat easier said than done.

In a show of community spirit, several local residents are assisting Ancona in making sure all aspects are correctly documented.  Official witnesses at the event will include First Selectman Rudy Marconi and Ridgefield Press Editor in Chief Jack Sanders.  Kristina Kelly, an attorney with the Ridgefield Main Street law firm of Reese, Hirsch, Shoults & Harrison, LLC, will act as Civil Notary.  Several local photographers and videographers will be on hand, as will experts from the wine industry.  Official timekeepers will be from the Ridgefield Aquatic Club.

Library Director Chris Nolan is looking forward to the event --- and even tried her hand at sabering, under Ancona’s tutelage.  “The Library is thrilled to be a part of this,” she said.  “We hope many from the community attend -- it’s for a great cause!”
