Community Art Project to Benefit Ridgefield Library

Watershed Gallery and the Friends of the Ridgefield Library have partnered to conduct a community arts project on Saturday, October 19.  Members of the public are welcome to attend one of two sessions to create artwork from pages of discarded or unwanted books.  The artwork will be mounted in a single art book, and then raffled off for the benefit of the New Ridgefield Library.

“We wanted to thank Ridgefield for supporting us in our first year of operation, and to thank the library for being terrific neighbors,” says Jennifer Mathy, director of the gallery. “The Friends of the Library have generously offered to contribute the books for this community project.”

During the art sessions, held at 11am and 3pm on October 19th, members of the public may paint, draw, collage and more, using pages from discarded books. Art supplies will be on hand, but people may bring mementos or art supplies of their own to create.  If adults or children wish to work in advance of the event, they may pick up a used book at the gallery beginning Thursday, October 10th.

Artists may keep their work or donate it to the larger project.  The community-created art book will be on display at Watershed Gallery until November 10th, when the winner of the raffle will be drawn.

In addition, Watershed Gallery will be holding an Altered Book Workshop with artist Katie Stevenson from 6:30-8:30 pm on October 24th. Using many different techniques such as sanding, painting, collaging, cutting, tearing, embellishing, and adhering, students will create an entire personalized "artist book".  The workshop, which is $30, is limited to 15 people and includes art materials.
