Svago Owner Seeks Help to Stay Open

E-mail pledge donations are being collected for the downtown cafe.

Cafe Svago owner Trish Arata still doesn't know whether her Main Street coffee shop will remain open in the long run, but she is confident she will continue serving lattes in the near future, at least.

"I'm open, I'm here, come in and patronize me," was Arata's plea on Monday afternoon.

Several customers have given cash donations to help Arata, who is months delinquent on her rent, keep Svago open. And loyal customer Kate Taylor suggested she set up an e-mail address, pledgecafesvago@gmail.com, to seek further assistance keeping Cafe Svago running.

"I go to the cafe quite regularly, and I can't even conceive of it not being there," said Taylor, a Ridgefield resident. The pledge idea came from NPR's pledge drives, she said—if Arata negotiates with her landlord, Urstadt Biddle Properties, to continue her tenancy, people who pledged will then donate the promised amounts to help ensure her success.

"I think that people genuinely care, and if people knew how immediate the situation was, they would help," Taylor said.

Arata said she continues trying to improve the cafe to attract as many patrons as possible. She pared her staff from 12 to five in recent weeks to save money, and she is providing greater supervision to remaining employees to ensure they offer tip-top customer service. She also started selling bags of the coffee brewed at the cafe, New London-based Bean & Leaf beans.

"I really want to stay here. I think the town—Main Street—needs what I offer," she said.

I feel bad for the owner.

I do think there MUST be a place for this type of business on Main Street. Question is, can she do it?

I hadn't been in the store in awhile (after some so-so experiences) but after reading about her attempts to stay in business, I thought I would go back again.

So last week, I went to buy some sweets, drinks and some soup to bring back to my office.

While some of the younger workers are gone, the place is still inefficient.

One worker, as she was taking an order, would enter an item in the register, go fetch the item, enter another item in register, fill the order -- all keeping the reigister tied up. The people in line were rolling their eyes.

I order soup. It was taken out of the 'heated' pot on the counter but had to be microwaved in the backroom. Seemed unusual. And, took a long time. Woman behind me thanked me, she was going to get soup but couldn't didn't have time to have it nuked and left.

There is a display case next to where you order with broker glass that is taped -- been like that for awhile. If a display case is like that, makes you wonder what the kitchen is like?

I hope she makes it.... I wish I knew her well enough to make suggestions, but I don't. I don't know that business other than being a patron. In the meanwhile, guess I will go to Ross'.
