The Staples boys basketball team looked like world beaters against a Ridgefield High School squad that is suddenly struggling.

The Wreckers allowed just seven points in the first half en route to a stunning 60-34 win over the Tigers to stay in the FCIAC playoff mix.

Peter Rankowitz scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, to pace Staples, which opened a mind-boggling 30-7 lead at the intermission.

James Frusciante added 12 points and Michael Argosh chipped in with 11 for the Wreckers, who improved to 9-9 overall and 8-8 in the FCIAC. Frusciante also had eight steals.

Kurt Steidl paced Ridgefield with just nine points. The Tigers, who were coming off a 47-45 overtime loss to Fairfield Ludlowe on Monday, dropped to 14-4 and 12-4.

Steidl was shut down Wednesday after scoring 31 points in the loss to Ludlowe.

Staples outscored Ridgefield 21-16 in the third quarter to extend its lead to 54-23.

The Ridgefield girls basketball team's hopes of making the state tournament came up one game short.

The Tigers suffered a 72-59 loss to Staples on Wednesday, ending the season with a 7-13 record the year after making the FCIAC finals.

Ridgefield, which stayed alive with a 63-50 win over Fairfield Ludlowe on Monday, needed eight victories to qualify for the Class LL state tournament.

The Darien and Ridgefield High School girls hockey teams played to a 2-2 tie Wednesday afternoon at the Winter Garden Arena.

Ridgefield goaltender Heather Ogden preserved the tie by stopping Ellie Bennett on a penalty shot with less than two minutes remaining.

Bennett and Sara Shaker scored for Darien, which is 11-5-1 overall and 9-3-1 in the FCIAC.

Kerry Sheehan-Delany and Cara Lockwood had the goals for Ridgefield, which is 12-5-1 and 9-3-1.

Ogden finished with 23 saves while Shannon Hall turned aside 10 shots for Darien.
