Ridgefield Boys Hockey Hammers Trumbull

Matt Flanagan and Terrance Guider each score two goals for Tigers in 6-0 rout of the Eagles

The Ridgefield boys hockey team continues to stake a claim as one of the top squads in the FCIAC.

Matt Flanagan and Terrance Guider each recorded two goals and an assist Wednesday  as the Tigers cruised to a 6-0 victory over Trumbull at the Shelton Ice Rinks.

Nate Gliedman and Brandon Belz combined for the Tigers' third shutout of the season. After Gliedman recorded 14 saves over the  first two periods, Belz came on in relief and stopped 10 shots in the third.

Belz's best save came when he used his glove to rob AJ DiMasi, who broke in alone with just over five minutes remaining.

In control from the opening faceoff, the Tigers (7-1, 11-3-0) climbed into sole possession of second place in the FCIAC East with 14 points. Ridgefield moved two points ahead of idle St. Joseph, although the Cadets have played two less games.

New Canaan, which handed the Tigers their only conference loss, holds down the top spot in the division with 16 points and is the only undefeated team in the state.

The Tigers struck quickly against Trumbull as Flanagan took a centering feed in the slot from John Richards and beat Matthew Paolini with a one-timer 2:39 into the contest.

Vincent Rella tallied at 10:34 before Flanagan scored his second just 31 seconds later to give Ridgefield a 3-0 lead after the first period.

Guilder registered his first of the game at 7:05 of the second, the only goal of the period.

Trumbull (3-5-1, 8-6-7) started getting frustrated and took three straight penalties, including two early in the third period.

Ridgefield cashed in its two-man advantage, taking a 5-0 lead when Guilder's snap shot from just outside the right faceoff circle snuck past Paolini at 2:41.

Sean Wilkinson capped the scoring with the prettiest goal of the game, as he skated the length of the ice for an unassisted goal with 4:45 remaining.

Nine players registered at least one point for Ridgefield with Matt Hrvatin picking up a pair of assists.

Paolini turned aside 31 shots for the Eagles, who suffered their second straight lopsided defeat.

Winless in its last five games (0-4-1), Trumbull was coming off a 7-0 loss to New Canaan on Saturday.

The Eagles hope to get back on track on Saturday, when they step outside the FCIAC to host New Fairfield-Immaculate  (7:30 p.m.).

Ridgefield goes for its fifth straight victory on Saturday at home against Staples-Weston-Shelton (8:50 p.m.).
