'Not Now And Not From The Taxpayers'

The best of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

GREENWICH: "I wonder if the person who donated the kidney they would have to use for this little girl realized that there was such a standard. This story is interesting on a number of levels." This is one reader's reaction to an opinion piece by Heather Borden Hervé about Amelia Rivera, a three-year-old girl who was denied a kidney transplant by the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHoP) because she has Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome.

RIDGEFIELD: "I do feel that the library is in need of updating and renovation, but not at the cost of $700 per household. The people of this town do not have $700 dollars to give at this time. I feel if the Library can raise 15 million on its own than get the extra 5 million for private donors and leave the taxpayers alone! To ask for money from people who do not and will not be using this library is unfair. Let us not forget that we have a possible 7 million for Schlumberger, a 3.26 percent increase for the Board of Ed and the town budget. Where is all this money going to come from? Where else but the taxpayers!! A new Library ok, but not now and not from the taxpayers of this town!!!!" This is one reader's response to Ridgefield Library's request for $5 million from the town to do renovations.

WESTON-REDDING-EASTON: "Nobody wants a loved one or anyone for that matter killed or maimed by a drunk driver. However, is incarceration the answer? Alcoholism like a cancer is a disease that needs to be treated. Should we be throwing our sick people in prison for being diseased? When DUI offeners are in carcerated they lose their jobs and their homes and their families many times go on state assistance. So we pay to support the families and the offerer housed in our already over crowded prisons. When they come out are they cured? I think not. Will they offend again. Probably. Are you getting the sense Connecticut is doing the wrong thing with DUI offenders. How about we get them treatment instead of paying for prison time? How about we make sure they use public transportation and keep them working to support themselves, their families, and pay taxes. Let's not dump this whole burden on the Connecticut taxpayer ..." This is one reader's response to Connecticut's new drunk driving laws, which went into effect on Jan. 1.

WESTPORT: "There's something to be said about the quality of life. It's very high in Connecticut. I wouldn't want to live in a more "retirement friendly" state, such as Florida. I'd die of boredom." This is one reader's response to news that Connecticut took the top spot on TopRetirements.com's 10 worst states to retire in 2012.
