Fire Guts Deer Park Tavern in Katonah

Same owners as the Bissell House.

KATONAH, N.Y.—An overnight fire destroyed the Deer Park Tavern, a popular restaurant whose owner, Roy Reeves, also owns Bissell House in Ridgefield.

The fire began at 2 a.m., gutting the restaurant's interior, shattering every window and partially caving the roof.

No one was injured.

"It was a stubborn fire and it took us about three hours to get it under control," said Katonah Fire Chief Paul Bauer.

There were no fire hydrants close enough to tap into for a direct water source, so fire trucks outfitted with 3,000-gallon tanks filled up at town hydrants on Jay Street and at a pond just off Route 22 on Edgewood Road, two-tenths of a mile north of Route 35.

Lingering flames in the basement prompted the Katonah Fire Department to begin demolition of the building around 10:30 a.m.

Just before 2 p.m. firefighters were rolling up hoses and preparing to leave the scene. Only the entryway of the restaurant remains, the rest of the structure lay in two heaping piles of smoldering rubble on either side of the front door.

Twelve fire trucks responded to the wood-frame tavern at 40 Deer Park Road, according to Bauer.

The fire may have been caused by electrical issues, Bauer said, though no formal investigation has begun.

The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire.

Reeves couldn't be reached.
