Boys' Lacrosse Buries Westhill With Fast Start

The Tigers scored nine unanswered goals in the first period en route to a 17-4 victory.

The Ridgefield High School boys' lacrosse team routed Westhill, 17-4, Tuesday afternoon in Stamford to improve to 4-1.

The Tigers put away the contest early, outscoring the Vikings 9-0 in the first quarter alone.

Senior captain Mike Galione's three goals and Kurt Mueller's goal and five assists led the way for Ridgefield, which has won four in a row since the team's season-opening overtime defeat at Staples.

Mueller and fellow attack midfielder Aaron Mathais controlled the game for Ridgefield by consistently scooping any loose balls away from Westhill and setting up the Tigers' offense.

Ridgefield coach Roy Colsey was proud of his team for not letting up following its 7-3 win over perennial New Jersey power Lawrenceville this past weekend.

"It really appears the light switch is turning on with these guys," Colsey said.

A number of Ridgefield's younger players peformed well, as Aidan Scott scored two goals and Chase South showed progress on defense.

South, with Canadian hockey roots, plays a tough and physical style on defense, which is appreciated by his coach.

Westhill is a young team after losing most of its senior leadership from last year  and starts mainly sophomores and juniors.

If not for the strong play of Westhill goaltender Wade McManus, the score could have been even worse. With an inexperienced defense in front of him, McManus did his best to battle Ridgefield's attackers.

Kyle Steurrock  had two goals for the Vikings (2-4).
